MR Escape Room

A single player MR(mixed reality) escape room experience using Quest 3 and physical room setup including Arduino based controllers.

MR escape room is a single player MR (Mixed Reality) LBE (Location-Based Entertainment) escape room experience. Player wears quest 3 and interact with the object in the physical environment to win 3 different levels and successfully escape from the room.

Experience Name: MR Escape Room

Set: Any room with enough empty space

Demographics: Teenagers and adults with game experience

Length: 20 minutes

Storyline

In this MR LBE escape room experience, The player is a playtester trapped in a game demo created by the genius developer, Jian. Known for trapping numerous testers in his game demos, Jian’s self-proclaimed masterpiece seamlessly blends various gaming genres, promising great success.

However, as testing begins, you find yourself stuck in the game backend, plagued with flaws. An evil presence, claiming to be Jian, obstructs your actions, trying to prevent your escape. In this critical moment, voices of previous testers guide you, revealing escape methods to help you find the backdoor to the real world.

Experience Breakdown

Stage 1

Intro

The player goes into the room with quest 3 on, searches the environment.

Stage 2

Pong

After pressing the button, the player falls into the pixel game world which is very similar with the classical game Pong. Evil pixel Jian appears and uses this game to trap the player.

Stage 3

2D world

After defeating Jian in the Pong game, Jian escape into the computer and return in a more advanced 2D state. At the time, a previous trapped playtester comes out to help the player. Player uses the physical button to help the playtester go through the desk and avoid the files throwed by Jian.

Stage 4

3D world

After defeating Jian by helping the playtester reach the end of the desk, Jian escapes again and hides in the computer. To find out Jian’s computer’s password and escape from the room, player need to use his/her new power - see through the computer by holding his/her hand above the computer.

Hardware Design

We use Wifi Arduino to build the physical controller and communicate with the headset. Instead of Quest controller, using physical props as the controller makes the experience more immersive and reduce the learning cost.

Setting Design

The setting is designed as a game programmer’s workspace. With our self-build level editor we are able to fit the experience into different rooms according to our need.

We had the chance to run the experience in both CMU carnival and ETC internal festival and had over 100 players go through our escape room.
